Joseph
Rice
Born
within the city walls of Coventry in 1955 the youngest of six
children.
The son of recently arrived immigrants from Scotland, attracted
to the boom town economy of the industrial city
The
young Joseph soon attracted the attention of teachers with his
advanced standard of artwork demonstrating skills beyond his years
As
a young man he flitted from job to job working in diverse employment
from car factories to art shops, all the while practicing his
painting. This seems to have set the pattern for his later life.
By 20 he had enough paintings to mount a solo exhibition at the
Belgrade theatre in the city (1974)
Having no formal art training up until this stage he attended
a life class at the local technical college. Within a short time
he had embarked upon full time art educational courses remaining
a student for seven years. From this time he exhibited work in
local galleries engaged upon freelance mural work for private
commissions and graduated with a BA (hons) degree in Fine art
(1981) Previous to graduation he completed a large scale mural
for Starley road Housing co-operative (1981) which was re-visited
and repainted in 2003
Joseph has exhibited in several open/joint shows, four solo exhibitions
and has work in several private collections around Europe.
Having
flirted with several genres of art Joseph absorbed the work of
many artists, both contemporary and classical. The galleries show
a great distance has been travelled. His emphasis has moved from
expressive to observational work describing whimsical ideas or
an appreciation of place, produced by methods grounded in traditional
practices of craft and techniques. Joseph’s work as an art lecturer
reflects his interest in the draughtsmanship, which underpins
this approach to creative production.
Joseph
lives in Northwarwickshire these days
Now
in his Fifties Joseph still suprises us with an unexpected view
or change of direction, Eclectic would be a good description when
seeing work produced in relation to previous creations, but the
overview of four decades allows the viewer to see a gradual development
and thematic body of work appearing.
